Local Organic Futons

Recent events have made me need to search out a new mattress/bed. I considered a full natural organic mattress; at the Vancouver Home & Interior Design Show in October I had the opportunity to lie on a GreenSleep mattress.. the most comfortable mattress ever- made even better by knowing I'm not breathing in/lying on carcinogenic chemical flame retardants.

Buying mattresses online is always an option- but locally made/shipped is always better. The company that had the mattress on display, M-Smart Design is in West Van, so an immediate first choice, however, the prices of these mattresses would run me $2300-$6200 (or $1490-$3875 for another model). Do I really have to spend this much for a mattress that isn't laced with chemicals and is made from natural/sustainable materials? -- It would seem so.

Not wanting to spend this much, I decided to check out the option of futons rather than a regular mattress. I found futons online that are actually more like mattresses as they have natural rubber insides rather than just being made out of just organic cotton- making the lifespan of them greater. I then searched a while longer, because there *must* be a store in Vancouver that has what I'm looking for so I don't have to deal with unnecessary shipping and costs. What I found so far:

  • The Good Planet - Based locally in Victoria, BC, have several organic natural rubber futon options and mattresses, as well as frames, and organic bamboo bedsheets & duvet covers (very reasonably priced as well!) Even more exciting is the fact that their online prices include shipping to Vancouver Island/ Lower Mainland, and is shipped from Canada and there futons are handcrafted in Canada. In a price comparisons, a 6" Queen is $1,499.00 (including shipping).

  • Eclectrix.org - Situated in White Rock, BC I would be much more likely to actually visit their store, no ferry to cross. However, their website is no more than a page saying "coming soon! (october 2007!)" I emailed them asking If they had organic futons, and they responded that they had several different styles, and left me a phone number and address of their store to visit. Unfortunately, did not leave any pricing, and have yet to get a response regarding that.

On top of the futon, I will also have to get a foundation/base for it, which even with that added cost is much cheaper than the full mattress plus bedframe. The Good Planet was super helpful when I emailed them asking about what options they provide for bases to futons. Unless Eclectrix has a significantly lower price for the same quality of futon, I will be going with the Good Planet's futons, and also pick up some bamboo sheets while I'm at it.

HI Alexa,
Thank you for contacting Eclectrix™ Organic Home and Spirit Interior Design. We specialize in organic interior design and retail organic interior products including the Green Sleep beds, White Lotus organic beds and our own label manufactured by Sleep Tek. To support an organic futon, the frame needs to be strong because latex is very heavy and so is layered organic cotton and all organic fibers need flow-through air to breath. We sell futon frames manufactured in the US, but they are FSC wood and have very low to now VOC finishes. The organic latex mattresses are made in Canada with Malaysian organic latex, organic wool and organic cotton.
I would suggest you buy the most you can afford and consider it an investment. After all we sleep for a third of our lives and without a good rest, the body is more susceptible to weakness. If you can afford a bed, but the set, if you can afford the mattress, get that for now. If you purchase an organic futon, at least get a size that is transferable to a bed later. Then you need organic bedding to complete the chemical free sleep. Please view our site www.spiritinteriors.com for further information and soon our home store site will be operational as well. eclectrix.org. Happy sleeping.
