Is Work "Published" Automatically?

Hi everyone,

I've noticed that a lot of my work is coming up as "published" and "available as e-book". What exactly does this mean? I don't want my work to be too widespread, as the majority of it is ongoing / works-in-progress.

I've changed them back to "unpublished", but is there any way to stop this?

If, on the off-chance someone is doing this on my behalf, could they please stop? If I choose to publish, I will do so in my own time.

Some of my work is being published without my intent, too---it seems to be occurring almost automatically, and randomly.

Of course it should be your decision to publish or not. You should message the owner Jon Paul so he can look into it. It could be an oversight or glitch in the system.

When i post stuff here i always hit the Publish tab up top, by choice. It puts a Copyright tag at the bottom. But like Deborah said it could be a glitch or an oversight. If it's someone doing it that could be something serious, hopefully its not that.

Probably a glitch.

For my information, I never understood what it means. Do we have a choice to publish or unpublish? I understood that if we post a file it is automatically available to read by all in the system. What is the difference if we do not publish it??

Since i joined, I have been pressing the publish button in my own files when I write a new file, thinking that it is saved as a draft only I can read if I don't press publish. Yet I have read files where the publish button is not pressed. They read the same. How do you guys manage your files when you post them. Just for my information here. It will help me with my files too.

Jon said his developer is on holiday. Perhaps that is why the glitch is happening. I will message him too.

I hope none of your files are missing. Leonard lost a lost of files earlier but Jon found them as inactive and reactivated them back on line. Just to make sure, please check if all your work is safe and intact here. I fear some files may be missing if there is a glitch in your account.

Please message me as well if you need further assistance on this. For problems in the system, you can directly message myself or Deborah or Jon Paul. Help is available at once even if you don't start a discussion on it.

We are here to help you anytime. :)

Sent message to Jon. I am gone five weeks and the system is glitching already. :P

On a serious note, I have a favor to ask you all. We can check a bit ourselves too if the system is working correctly. Next time when you guys post a file, can you please reload the page again to just check if it was published automatically when you reloaded it? Just to rule out that the system is not getting some random command by mistake to publish files on its own. A command can get stuck sometimes. I really don't understand how software works but I do know that a glitch can repeat if looped in by mistake.

I hope no work is lost here by mistake. That would be bad and must be avoided at all costs.

Hope this wont stop you from writing here Hannah. You are a valuable member of SS and your work is widely appreciated here.

Thanks, everyone. Just to clarify, I don't mind my pieces being readable on the site itself, and I haven't lost any files - I'm just uncomfortable with my work being available as an e-book while it's still in progress.

Also, it's possible that I might be the one doing something wrong without knowing it, so please don't blame the site or its staff straight away!

No issues at all. As a writer here it is your right to safeguard your work. Besides, its fun to pester Jon and his developers. :P

Hi Everyone! Sorry I somehow missed this thread earlier. Nothing is in place that is capable of auto publishing your work. If it IS happening it is a glitch and I will have someone look into it and see what is going on.

To be honest, the 'publish' functionality is a bit confusing and something scheduled to be looked at and changed sometime in the future. Clicking publish only converts your writing to PDF format and makes it available to be read that way. But I am pretty sure that is all that happens when you push 'publish'.

What I am thinking of changing (and I stress 'IN THE FUTURE' sometime) is to create a 'draft' stage where you are still writing and don't wish the work to be publicly viewable except to people you invite and that when you click 'publish' it becomes publicly viewable, it creates an eBook and gives you the option of listing the eBook in various directories etc. BUT that is probably a long way down the road :)

Jon, thankyou for the info. It happened when I was away so I was late in noticing it. Usually I am the first to notice and report a system glitch. A bad habit. :)

Frankly, I dont even remember which file I pressed publish on and which I didnt in my own account so I wish I could check my account too. May be my unpublished files were published too by mistake but I cant remember the ones I didnt publish. Would be cool if you checked it out for all files.

I dont know how to use the function you mentioned. How do we list on other sites to read our file here as an e book??

Agree on the draft idea. All blogs do it. I remember using wordpress and saving my files as draft until I had edited them. No one can read a draft except you and it keeps data on line for accessibility. That would be a good change here.

Yes John....it has happened to me too. I couldn't understand why, either!!

Thank you Jon for clearing that up. Sometimes things are not always as self explanatory as one would imagine. I like the idea of having a draft option sometime down the road.
Haven't had anything self publish yet but wouldn't it be great one day you woke up and found your writing had self published itself into a bookstore without the fuss of having to do it yourself.

Exactly. :) Lol. I would love to be published without my knowing. Would be nice to receive royalty for work that magically got published while you were sleeping. :P
